Coir Fibre

Coir fibres are derived from coconut husks and regarded as environmentally friendly material. They are generally classified into two categories, White and Brown fibre according to their peel off time from the husks.

White fibres are extracted from the husks shortly before they ripen whereas husks of fully ripened coconuts yield brown fibres. White fibres are traditionally twisted into ropes or woven into mats. The permeable fabrics made from the woven white fibres are commonly used in the form of geotextile for various civil engineering applications including retaining structures, embankments, bank protection, construction site silt fences, etc.

Coir geotextile is a very popular solution for erosion control due to the fabric’s substantial mechanical strength and durability (3-5 years). On the other hand, the highly abrasion resistant brown fibres are used for the production of brushes, floor mats, mattress and upholstery padding. Coir fibre degrades naturally into a mature compost (humus) which enriches the soil.
